RIYADH — Al Hilal and Brazilian football star Neymar Jr. have officially terminated their contractual relationship by mutual consent, the Saudi Pro League club announced on Tuesday.
In a statement, Al Hilal expressed their gratitude for Neymar’s contributions during his time with the team.
“The club expresses its thanks and appreciation to Neymar for what he has provided throughout his career with Al Hilal and wishes the player success in his career,” the statement read.
Neymar joined Al Hilal in August 2023 on a record-breaking €90 million transfer deal, making him one of the most high-profile players in the Saudi Pro League. The move was seen as a significant milestone for Saudi Arabia’s growing football ambitions.
However, Neymar’s tenure at Al Hilal was marred by injuries, including a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament sustained in October 2023, which sidelined him for an extended period.
As a result, his appearances for the club were limited to just seven matches, during which he scored one goal and contributed with a few assists.
Neymar’s arrival had initially sparked excitement among Al Hilal fans and bolstered the club’s profile on the international stage.
Despite the challenges, his short stint was marked by moments of brilliance, but his time at the club ultimately fell short of the expectations set by his transfer fee and reputation.
The mutual termination of Neymar’s contract marks the end of a brief chapter in the star’s storied career, which has included successes at Santos, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and the Brazilian national team.
